Artes Mundi

If you have not done so already, then go check out the Artes Mundi exhibition at National Museum of Cardiff.
The prize brings together outstanding artists from around the world who stimulate thinking about the human condition and humanity. Its aim is to give a platform to contemporary artists who are established in their own countries but have previously received little critical recognition in the UK.

Deconstructing the classics

Contraalma
Paul Jones & Matthew Lovett.
Contraalma is the first recording in a series I'm doing of improvised works detailing deconstructions of familiar Jazz standards.
The original "Con Alma" was written by Dizzy Gillespie in 1956, and has been re-recorded subsequently by artists as diverse as Oscar Peterson and Chaka Khan.
The three tracks here are taken from one single continuous improvisation performed by Paul Jones (Piano) and Matthew Lovett (Percussion).
N.B The pianist is working with material drawn from Con Alma while the percussionist, having not been informed of this strategy beforehand, is not.

Playing keys for the D.E.R Collective. What a Joy!

Most tracks ever played in one day for any album i've ever performed on.. 14 tracks in one day!!
Luckily Mr Roberts was on hand to make sure things went swimmingly. Huge fun playing on this; Rhodes, Piano, Synths, Organs.. the lot. All my parts recorded in my home studio with Deri's mobile set up. Features some excellent musicians also. Will be gigging with this in autumn and winter 2010.

NOAH. Film by Joel Calvert. Music by Paul Jones

This is a great new animated film made I recently wrote the soundtrack for. Its by Joel Calvert,a recent graduate of the Newport school of Art, Media and Design. The soundtrack was written for a recent Dots.Filmband live project featuring six new films by welsh filmakers.

The score is designed to be played live by Dots. which features myself, Tim Tate and Tina Hitchens. As such the instrumentation is limited to Synth, Prepared Guitar, and an amplified Bicycle Frame to create a multitude of metallic sound effects. The version added to the film here is a pre-recorded soundtrack with me overdubbing the three elements....
