Artes Mundi

If you have not done so already, then go check out the Artes Mundi exhibition at National Museum of Cardiff.
The prize brings together outstanding artists from around the world who stimulate thinking about the human condition and humanity. Its aim is to give a platform to contemporary artists who are established in their own countries but have previously received little critical recognition in the UK.

Deconstructing the classics

Paul Jones & Matthew Lovett.
Contraalma is the first recording in a series I'm doing of improvised works detailing deconstructions of familiar Jazz standards.
The original "Con Alma" was written by Dizzy Gillespie in 1956, and has been re-recorded subsequently by artists as diverse as Oscar Peterson and Chaka Khan.
The three tracks here are taken from one single continuous improvisation performed by Paul Jones (Piano) and Matthew Lovett (Percussion).
N.B The pianist is working with material drawn from Con Alma while the percussionist, having not been informed of this strategy beforehand, is not.
